Who am I?

At some point in their lives everyone has questioned their meaning and purpose. Why am I here? What am I here for? What is the point of life?

This questioning raises awareness that something is missing in their life, and often this makes people aware of a gap, a deep void inside.

People try to fill this emptiness in many ways. Some try to close the gap with money which leads to materialism. This way of thinking is heavily promoted in the world today that by having possessions or material wealth, all human need and quality of life will be fulfilled. Instead the conclusion of this becomes discontent and disappointment.

Others try drugs, smoke, excess alcohol and sexual promiscuity which are all obviously seriously damaging in a number of ways.

Still others think hard work, success, fame, sex, a career, music, sport, hobbies or holidays is the answer. There may not be anything wrong with these in themselves but they do not satisfy that hunger deep inside every human being.

Even the most closest and loving relationships as great as they are do not in themselves satisfy this emptiness deep inside.

The only way the emptiness can be fulfilled is by realising and understanding what we were created for –

A relationship with God

To understand this we must look at the Holy Bible - Gods Word and consider the following points:

Creation, the Fall, Redemption

Who is God?

God created the heavens and the earth and everything in it (Genesis 1)

God is Spirit (John 4:24)

God exists in three persons – Father, Son and Holy Spirit (Matthew 28:19)

Who are we?

We were made in the image of God (Genesis 1:26)

Man was made for perfect fellowship with God (Psalm 100:3)

Everything was good (Genesis 1:31)

We are made up of three parts – spirit, soul and body (1 Thessalonians 5:23). If you are a non believer then the spirit part of you is currently dormant but a Christians spirit is now alive as you will read how below.

So you are made up of physical material, the body that can be seen and touched. But you are also made up of immaterial aspects which are the soul and spirit.

Here’s a basic example of how you can see the difference between the two. Someone can hurt you by pinching your arm which your senses can feel. Then someone can hurt you without even touching you by using unkind words about you. These words hurt your soul which you cannot feel but your emotions can still be hurt. So you can see from this example that we’re not just physical beings.

The Fall

Man’s relationship with God was broken after man chose independence and disobeyed Gods command after being deceived and tempted by satan (Genesis 3, Isaiah 59:2)

Man and the earth now live under a curse (Isaiah 24:6)

So as we mentioned earlier, a gap now exists in every human being who is born on the earth. Man is incomplete. The spirit part of man was disconnected and separated from God. Man became a two part being - body and soul from a three part being - body, soul and spirit (the spirit currently being dead until being regenerated by salvation in Jesus Christ). We must point out here that the soul is still immaterial and cannot be seen but there is a clear difference between soul and spirit as you can see from our illustration below.

So we now come to the only way in which our spirit can be reconnected with God by receiving salvation and eternal life - through His Son Jesus Christ

One of the most popular Bible verses John 3:16-17 says

For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life. For God did not send His Son into the world to condemn the world, but that the world through Him might be saved.”

“I (Jesus) have come that they may have life, and that they may have it more abundantly” John 10:10 (brackets mine)

God loved us so much that he offered us a solution to fill that gap inside us by reconnecting us with Him through His Son Jesus Christ. People are separated from God because of their sins. But Jesus provides the bridge for us to receive Gods grace of forgiveness for our sins and fulfil the hope of eternal life. This was the purpose of Jesus Christ and why Jesus is Lord.

God sent Jesus as our representative (2 Corinthians 5:21)

Jesus lived a perfect life (Hebrews 4:15)

Jesus died and rose from death (1 Corinthians 15: 3-4)

Jesus took away our sins (1 John 3:5)

Jesus died in our place (Romans 5:8)

We are redeemed through Christ’s birth, death and resurrection (Ephesians 1:7)

Jesus is the only way to God (John 14:6)

When you give your life to God by faith in His Son Jesus Christ, your spirit is reconnected to Him and this enables you to contact and receive God. God is the intended content of your spirit and only He can fulfil the longing of your third part. Without Him your deepest part is empty, and you can never be fully satisfied. When He comes into your spirit, He fills that deep emptiness inside and you find peace, purpose and meaning and your new life with God begins!
